A long-term wet lease refers to the arrangement in which an airline with an active operational license leases an available aircraft from another airline, also holding an active operational license, under ACMI terms. The leasing period ranges from one month to six months or more, depending on legal requirements.
Reasons for airlines to operate for such leasing arrangements include:
- Delays in the planned induction of an aircraft into the fleet.
- Technical issues leading to delayed completion of scheduled maintenance.
- Accidents or damages preventing planned aircraft from operating.
- Increased demand during specific periods.
Wet leases are generally conducted under ACMI terms. In certain circumstances, and if regulatory conditions allow, they can also be conducted as AMI leases.
The airline providing the wet lease is responsible for meeting the following ACMI requirements during the lease period:
- A (Aircraft): The leased aircraft must possess a valid airworthiness certificate.
- C (Crew): The aircraft must be staffed with pilots and cabin crew holding valid licenses suitable for the aircraft type. The number of crew must be adequate for the planned flight hours.
- M (Maintenance): Maintenance and repair services must be performed by certified technicians qualified for the specific aircraft type, covering routine and non-routine tasks.
- I (Insurance): The aircraft must be insured under a policy meeting international civil aviation requirements, covering all necessary terms and limits.
